The excitement is building and the party season is here, but research shows that Brits pile on an average of 7lb at Christmas which is often never ditched! So, if you are a social butterfly you could well be in danger of stuffing yourself as well as the bird.
However, the good news is that there is an alternative, which takes none of the fun away, bans nothing completely but enables you to make clever choices, ensuring that you enter 2016 without any unwanted rolls or poundage.
All you need do is simply focus on sticking to these easy rules and make this the year that you beat the festive fat trap!
- AIM TO MAINTAIN
Mentally affirm to yourself on a daily basis that you will not gain weight that you will have a fun filled, wonderful festive season whilst being fully in control of the healthy nutritious food that you put into your amazing body.
Folks, we BELIEVE what we tell ourselves!
Don’t attempt to lose weight over the Christmas period, unless you are doing my one to one programme, instead, aim to sustain your current weight.

- DON’T PARTY ON AN EMPTY STOMACH
Eat something that you know is good for you prior to arrival. In doing this you will dramatically reduce the chances of inhaling vast quantities of fat laden party food. Fill up with lean meats, fish, crudités, hummus, sushi, guacamole, salsa and fruit salad. Avoid the pastry encased rubbish, crisps and creamy dips.
- DOWNSIZE THE DISH
If you know that you struggle to leave food on your plate, then use a smaller one. A full, small plate will satisfy the mind that you have had sufficient. As soon as you are full, stop eating. You do not have to clear your plate or become stuffed and bloated. If you are you’ve gone too far.
- SLEEP IT OFF
Slumber is one of your best allies in the battle of the bulge. Lack of sleep can really interfere with our eating patterns and ability to control what we put in our mouths. So, ensure you get plenty of rest between events, with 7 to 8 hours quality sleep per night.
- RETHINK DRINK,
Believe me, I’m no spoil sport fairy and for many of us a moderate amount of alcohol can add to the enjoyment of a get together. Should you choose to drink, watch your glass size and be careful with top ups – topping up your glass can lead to you losing count of the amount you have drunk. Finish one glass before accepting a top up. Also, alternate your drinks with a glass of water. Hangover avoidance is crucial to reduce the temptation to eat more rubbish the next day.
- DON’T QUIT!
Stick to your normal exercise routine. It can be tempting to ditch it at this time of year, using the excuse you are too busy. No one is too busy to exercise, it’s a question of priorities so make this one of yours! If you don’t already exercise, then get to it – start with brisk walks that raise your heart rate and make you a little breathless.
Stick to these rules, and I hope you all have a magical, sparkling and happy Christmas and Santa brings everything your heart desires!
